Productivity of the tree has been greatly improved since the
original importation of Hevea from Brazil to Asia in the 1870s.
Unselected seedlings yield around 400 kg/ha/year whereas modern
clones, produced by generations of breeding cycles, can give
commercial yields well over 2000 kg/ha/year. Productivity
per tree can also be increased with the aid of yield stimulants
and by using recently-developed exploitation techniques such
as "puncture tapping". Indian smallholdings are
notable for their high yields. |
