- high temperatures (above about 150°C for natural
rubber)
- low temperatures (natural rubber is capable of operating
down to about -60°C)
- exposure to fuels, especially petroleum (gasoline)
- exposure to high levels of ozone (but bulky objects
remain unaffected except for some superficial degrdataion)
- exposure to sunlight and other sources of ultaviolet
radiation (protection can be given by carbon black or
by UV absorbers)
- exposure to some chemicals, but natural rubber may be
more suitable for protection against some chemicals, especially
many acids and water (some synthetics have a very poor
ability to withstand long-term immersion in water)
- permeability to air and other gases
- exposure to high energy radiation (natural rubber is
resistant)
