Hostile Invironment

  • high temperatures (above about 150°C for natural rubber)
  • low temperatures (natural rubber is capable of operating down to about -60°C)
  • exposure to fuels, especially petroleum (gasoline)
  • exposure to high levels of ozone (but bulky objects remain unaffected except for some superficial degrdataion)
  • exposure to sunlight and other sources of ultaviolet radiation (protection can be given by carbon black or by UV absorbers)
  • exposure to some chemicals, but natural rubber may be more suitable for protection against some chemicals, especially many acids and water (some synthetics have a very poor ability to withstand long-term immersion in water)
  • permeability to air and other gases
  • exposure to high energy radiation (natural rubber is resistant)
